HBO’s House of the Dragon, the critically acclaimed Game of Thrones prequel, is gearing up for its third season, with production officially slated to begin in early 2025. Showrunner and co-creator Ryan Condal confirmed during a press conference that the writing process is well underway, and pre-production began this fall.
Following the dramatic events of Season 2, which concluded on August 4, fans are eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the “Dance of the Dragons” storyline, adapted from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. While the final episode left out the Battle of the Gullet—an iconic and pivotal moment in the tale—Condal assured fans that the epic conflict would be a major highlight of the upcoming season. Describing it as the “biggest thing to date” for the series, he emphasized that the delay was necessary to deliver a sequence that meets the show’s ambitious production standards.
Season 3 is expected to continue with a similar cadence to Season 2, which featured eight episodes, though the exact episode count has not yet been finalized. While HBO has now confirmed that House of the Dragon will conclude with a fourth season, Condal and Martin are carefully pacing the series to give key events the time and weight they deserve.
The series continues to be produced by HBO in collaboration with its key partners, including Condal, George R.R. Martin, and Miguel Sapochnik. HBO’s other Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, is also in production, keeping the franchise firmly in the spotlight.
For production professionals, House of the Dragon Season 3 represents another monumental opportunity to work on one of television’s most complex and ambitious series. With early production details and crew requirements expected to emerge soon, FTIA will provide updates on key hiring opportunities and filming locations.
