NCIS: Los Angeles starts its 9th season on CBS on October 1, 2017. Season 8 ended with bang, but it also started with one too. The season started with Undersecretary of Defense Corbin Duggan, a Washington insider looking to make a name for himself, comes to unit to reorganize it because of their inability to find the mole in the organization. With many exciting twists and turns, including the disappearance of Owen Granger (played by Miguel Ferrer who died from throat cancer during the season,) the season ends with the kidnapping and death of Sam Hanna’s wife, Michelle. Killed by the terrorist Tahir Khaled, who has plagued Sam for several season, Khaled is finally killed and Sam is left dealing with Michelle’s death and taking care of his two children. Even so, the final scene is one of hope – Kensi proposes to Deeks!
Season 9 is shaping up to be just as intriguing as Season 8. Nia Long joins the NCIS: LA cast as Shay Mosely. Mosely is the new executive assistant director and takes the place of Owen Granger. She is a former Secret Service Agent, who is mostly by the book, but is not afraid of getting her hands dirty, if needed. Sparks are certainly going to fly between Hetty and Mosely, since both women have very definite ideas on how to do things. Hosely is sure to make some changes and institute some new rules. She may even go so far as to try to break up the team. It is almost certain that she will interact with the team members in a way different from Grangers. The teammates may not trust her. Long is known for her work on TV and in movies, particularly Big Momma’s House (2000), Friday (1995), and Boiler Room (2000).
At the end of Season 8, Kensi and Deeks got engaged, when Kensi pulled a detonation ring from a flash grenade and got down on one knee and proposed to Deeks with it. Never mind that Deeks proposed to Kensi with an actual ring several times during the season. It will be interesting to see how Kensi and Deeks deal with being engaged and working together as teammates. Deeks is certain to drive the rest crazy with trying to pin Kensi down to wedding plans. And since their mother’s are such good friends, as we saw during Kensi’s recovery in Season 8, they will probably drive the happy couple nuts, too. With clashes about the wedding, trying to plan it between cases, and interfering mothers, one must wonder if there will even be a wedding in Season 9.
The shocker of Season 8 was the death of Sam Hanna’s wife, Michelle (played by Aunjanue Ellis.) For several seasons, Sam Hanna has been fighting off attacks on his family from Tahir Khaled, a terrorist whose sister fell in love with Sam. Sam used that love to turn her against her brother and brought her to the United States to testify. Khaled, being a very slippery terrorist, escaped multiple times and decided to go after Sam’s family in retaliation. A few seasons ago, Khaled took the military school that Sam’s son attended hostage and the team had to save them. This season’s two-part finale, starts with Michelle’s kidnapping and death, and finishes with Sam and Callen killing Khaled.
In Season 9, Sam is still trying to deal with Michelle’s death. His son was getting ready to go to a military academy after graduating from high school. Will Sam be able to let him go and how will he deal with it if he does? He also has a 12 year-old daughter, who must be missing her mom terribly. Sam is going to have to learn how to be a single father, and widow while doing a job that is directly or indirectly responsible for his fate. Other questions to be answered this season are: 1) Is he ready to come back to the team? 2) Will he let the team in or will he push them away. Lastly, how will all this affect his relationship with Callen? Callen and Sam have had each other’s backs for a long time and their friendship is solid. The conflict of coming back after something like this will make for a great TV season.
