Sony has officially announced that the new “I Know What You Did Last Summer” film, directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, will hit theaters on July 18, 2025, under the Columbia Pictures banner. Robinson, known for “Do Revenge,” co-wrote the script with Sam Lansky, based on a screenplay by Leah McKendrick.
The plot details are currently under wraps, but fans of the franchise will be excited to hear that original stars Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt are expected to reprise their roles. Neal Moritz returns as the producer, ensuring continuity in the series’ legacy.
The original 1997 film, “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” launched the careers of Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe. The movie follows four friends who accidentally hit a pedestrian while driving on a coastal road. In a panic, they dispose of the body in the ocean and vow to keep the incident a secret. A year later, they start receiving cryptic messages from someone who knows their secret, leading to a series of stalkings and attacks by a mysterious figure with a hook.
The film’s success led to sequels, including “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” in 1998 and “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer” in 2006. The franchise was also reimagined as a television series on Prime Video in 2021.
The announcement of the release date for the new “I Know What You Did Last Summer” follows Universal’s slate of release date news. This includes Blumhouse’s thriller “The Woman in the Yard” on March 28, 2025, “Drop” on April 11, 2025, “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” on December 5, 2025, and “The Black Phone 2” shifting to October 17, 2025. “M3GAN 2.0” will now open in the June 2025 slot.
With Jennifer Kaytin Robinson at the helm and the return of beloved characters, the new “I Know What You Did Last Summer” film is poised to bring fresh thrills to fans of the classic horror franchise.
