In 1984 California, ex-hippie Zoyd Wheeler’s bizarre ritual for disability checks leads to trouble with federal agent Brock Vond. Zoyd and his daughter Prairie seek refuge with old friends, uncovering a tumultuous story involving Prairie’s estranged mother, Frenesi Gates. Amidst ’60s hippie culture, Frenesi becomes a double agent for Brock, disappearing as a result. Prairie finally meets her mother at a family reunion, while Brock’s pursuit ends tragically with shifting anti-drug efforts. Prairie embraces a future liberated from the past’s shadows.
