About

Thousand Words is an independent feature film finance and production company founded by Jonah Smith and Palmer West in 2000 in New York, later relocating to Los Angeles. The company's name is a play on the saying 'a picture is worth a thousand words.' Known for backing auteur-driven, risk-taking indie projects — including Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream, Richard Linklater's Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly, and Bill Maher's Religulous — the company operated a lean, private-equity-backed model without board oversight, allowing filmmakers maximum creative freedom. Following the 2008 financial crisis, the company ceased active production, with founders Smith and West subsequently departing the film industry.
