Wētā FX (formerly Weta Digital) is one of the world's premier digital visual effects and computer animation studios, headquartered in Miramar, Wellington, New Zealand, with creative hubs in Vancouver, Canada and Melbourne, Australia. Founded in 1993 by Peter Jackson, Richard Taylor, and Jamie Selkirk, the studio is renowned for groundbreaking performance-driven animated characters such as Gollum, Kong, Neytiri, Caesar, and Pogo, and for creating immersive worlds including Middle-earth and Pandora. The studio has earned eight Academy Awards® for Best Visual Effects, 17 Academy Sci-Tech Awards, eight BAFTA Awards for Visual Effects, and 68 Visual Effects Society Awards, and is considered one of the most influential film companies of the 21st century. In 2021, Peter Jackson sold the company's VFX tools development division to Unity Technologies for US$1.625 billion, with the visual effects studio itself being renamed Wētā FX and remaining under the ownership of Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh.
