Production Ramps Up on CBS Spin-Offs Boston Blue and Sheriff Country With Returning Stars and Expanded Crews

CBS has officially kicked off production on two major spin-offs: Boston Blue, a new chapter in the Blue Bloods franchise, and Sheriff Country, expanding the world of Fire Country. Both series are now in active development with filming expected to begin this spring.

Boston Blue sees Donnie Wahlberg reprise his role as Detective Danny Reagan, this time transferring to the Boston Police Department. Behind the scenes, the production is building out its Toronto-based crew, with new department heads being onboarded for what’s expected to be a dynamic, gritty take on the classic procedural. The series is being overseen by the team behind Blue Bloods, with showrunner duties handled by longtime franchise collaborators.

On a similar note, Sheriff Country has entered early production stages with Morena Baccarin leading the cast as Sheriff Mickey Fox. Introduced in a backdoor pilot during Fire Country Season 2, the new show will also shoot in Toronto locations with much of the production team transitioning from the original series. While the show is set in the fictional town of Edgewater, California, it's being produced in Toronto, Canada. Casting directors are currently filling out supporting roles while department heads for stunts, locations, and unit production management have been confirmed.

Both series are part of CBS Studios’ continued expansion of successful crime drama universes. Filming is expected to span several months, and production offices have been established in Boston and Northern California, respectively.

Crew members and production professionals looking to get involved with either series should follow ongoing updates.
