David Edward Kelley (born April 4, 1956, Waterville, Maine) is one of television's most prolific writer-producers and showrunners, a former Boston attorney who launched his TV career as a writer on L.A. Law in 1986. He is the creator of landmark series including Picket Fences, Ally McBeal, The Practice, Boston Legal, Chicago Hope, Big Little Lies, The Undoing, and Presumed Innocent, and is the only producer in Emmy history to win Outstanding Comedy and Outstanding Drama in the same year (1999). Through his banner, David E. Kelley Productions, he has produced over 1,000 hours of television, earning more than 200 Emmy nominations. His current projects include Margo's Got Money Troubles (Apple TV+, 2026), The Bonfire of the Vanities (Apple TV+ with Matt Reeves), and Nightshade (HBO Max).
