Joseph Gordon-Levitt has begun principal photography on 2034, an AI thriller that marks his third feature as director. The Netflix Original film stars Rachel McAdams in the lead role, joined by Jeff Daniels, Joel Edgerton, Caleb McLaughlin, and Nnamdi Asomugha. Gordon-Levitt co-wrote the script with Kieran Fitzgerald, his collaborator on Snowden, with a story credit shared by Natasha Lyonne. Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman are producing through T-Street Productions. Production launched May 4, 2026 in Belgrade, Serbia, with Montenegro serving as a second location. The shoot is scheduled to wrap in July. Set in the near future year of 2034, the film takes a critical look at artificial intelligence, centering on how AI threatens both society and creative labor. Netflix acquired the project in October 2025 after a competitive bidding war, positioning it as a high-priority package. A 2027 release is expected.
