The book features characters like Billie Carleton, a musical actress whose overdose death fueled public anxiety, Brilliant Chang, a Chinese restaurant owner, and Edgar Manning, a Jamaican jazz drummer who were portrayed as villains with a sexual menace. The book also talks about a group of seedy and rebellious hedonists. The drug problem was born and Britain was horrified and enthralled with the exotic details in the tabloids.
