Embers
Project Summary
Embers is a period drama now in production in Budapest, Hungary, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker István Szabó. The film stars Ralph Fiennes as Henrik and Viggo Mortensen as Konrad, two former friends who reconnect decades after Konrad's mysterious disappearance. Christopher Hampton adapted the screenplay from Sándor Márai's acclaimed novel, which he previously adapted for the West End stage. The production reunites Szabó with his Sunshine and Being Julia producer Robert Lantos and Sunshine star Fiennes, and marks another collaboration between Lantos and Mortensen following Eastern Promises. Charlotte Rampling, Katherine Langford, Louis Hofmann, Gijs Blom, Evelyne Brochu, and Jonah Russell round out the cast. The international co-production brings together Serendipity Point Films (Canada), HGO Films (Hungary), and Potboiler Productions (UK), with backing from MTVA, Beta Film, RAI Cinema, Bell Media, and CBC Films. Principal photography began in April 2026. Embankment Films is handling international sales ahead of the Cannes market in May.
