In the 1940s and 50s, Jinghui Liang was one of the most celebrated writers in China, capturing love, loss, and the weight of history with her sharp, delicate prose. By the 1990s, Jinghui had faded into obscurity. When her niece Xiaowen arrives from Beijing for the funeral, she steps into a world she has never known. Determined to understand the woman her family lost, Xiaowen begins searching for the missing manuscript, believing it holds the key to her aunt’s self-imposed exile. In this unfamiliar city, Xiaowen finds an unlikely companion in Kim, a young White woman who lived next door to Jinghui. Together, Xiaowen and Kim follow the traces Jinghui left behind, piecing together fragments of a life split between two worlds.
