Project Summary

The Buried Giant is an ambitious stop-motion animated feature in development at Netflix, directed by Guillermo del Toro. Based on Nobel Prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro's 2015 fantasy novel, the film follows elderly couple Axl and Beatrice as they traverse a mythical post-Arthurian England where collective amnesia clouds the land. Del Toro is co-writing the screenplay with Dennis Kelly, adapting a story about memory, loss, and the buried traumas of war. ShadowMachine, the Portland and Los Angeles-based animation studio behind del Toro's Oscar-winning Pinocchio, will serve as the production home base. At a recent BFI Fellowship ceremony in London, del Toro confirmed the project is gearing up but cautioned it will take years to complete due to the painstaking nature of stop-motion work. Ron Perlman has been confirmed to join the voice cast. This strictly adult-oriented animated epic represents Netflix's continued partnership with del Toro in pushing the boundaries of stop-motion storytelling.
